# Hanzi Guide > Free Chinese character writing practice with animated stroke order, handwriting exercises, Mandarin Pinyin, Cantonese Jyutping, device-voice listening, and printable worksheets. Supports simplified and traditional characters. Use the tutor guide below for exercise-link instructions. Practice, animations, listening, quizzes, and PDF generation run in the visitor's browser and require JavaScript. Character references and learning guides contain readable HTML. Practice links use this format: `https://www.hanzi.guide/?pronunciation=mandarin&script=simplified#%E4%BD%A0%E5%A5%BD` Set `pronunciation` to `mandarin` or `cantonese`, and `script` to `simplified` or `traditional`. Put percent-encoded Hanzi after `#`; the example opens 你好. Explicit language and script choices override saved display preferences. Character form and spoken language are separate choices. Keep each exercise within the practice input's six-character limit. Uncommon supplementary characters can occupy two input positions. Supply Hanzi without spaces or punctuation; split longer sentences into short words or groups and preserve the full sentence in the lesson. Full sentence navigation is not available. Links open the practice workspace. The learner can press Play, use listening buttons, or enable “I want to write!” for stroke practice. Listening depends on installed device voices; Cantonese requires a Cantonese voice. Individual character readings can differ from pronunciation in context, especially for polyphonic characters and tone changes. Stroke data may be unavailable for some characters. Worksheet links use `https://www.hanzi.guide/pdf.html#%E4%BD%A0%E5%A5%BD` and start PDF generation in the browser. Supply the desired characters directly; the practice link's language and script parameters do not configure the PDF. ## Guides - [Use Hanzi Guide with your tutor](https://www.hanzi.guide/tutor/): Exercise-link builder, supported URL fields, examples, and suggested tutor requests. - [Pinyin, Jyutping, and tones](https://www.hanzi.guide/howto/pinyin-jyutping-tones/): Initials, finals, tone diagrams, listening examples, and tone contrasts. - [Stroke order](https://www.hanzi.guide/howto/stroke-order/): Writing principles and practice guidance. - [Radicals](https://www.hanzi.guide/howto/radicals/): Introduction to character radicals. ## Practice examples - [Write 你](https://www.hanzi.guide/?pronunciation=mandarin&script=simplified#%E4%BD%A0): Open single-character Mandarin practice. - [Practise 你好](https://www.hanzi.guide/?pronunciation=mandarin&script=simplified#%E4%BD%A0%E5%A5%BD): Open short-phrase Mandarin practice. - [Hear 水 in Cantonese](https://www.hanzi.guide/?pronunciation=cantonese&script=traditional#%E6%B0%B4): Open Cantonese practice and use the listening controls. - [Worksheet for 你好](https://www.hanzi.guide/pdf.html#%E4%BD%A0%E5%A5%BD): Generate a printable writing worksheet. - [Tone listening quiz](https://www.hanzi.guide/tone-quiz/): Beginner two-tone comparisons with reference sounds and retries, plus full Mandarin or Cantonese tone challenges. ## Character references - [HSK 1 character list](https://www.hanzi.guide/hsk-1-characters/): Browse beginner characters and their reference pages. - [Character reference: 你](https://www.hanzi.guide/character/%E4%BD%A0/): Example reference with readings, meaning, stroke count, and writing practice. - [Sitemap](https://www.hanzi.guide/sitemap.xml): Discover available public pages. ## Optional - [Chinese idioms](https://www.hanzi.guide/idioms/): Idiom meanings and practice links. - [Chinese variety quiz](https://www.hanzi.guide/geo-quiz/): Explore regional Chinese language patterns.
